Just reading the words “hard drive crash” can send shivers down your spine. If you’ve ever had your computer crash on you, you’re all too familiar with the feelings of panic that wash over you, making you feel like you’re drowning in fear and sorrow.
The unfortunate fact is that almost every PC owner will deal with their computer crashing at some point. It’s nearly inevitable. In fact, if you’re reading this, that probably means that you’re trying to deal with a hard drive crash right now.
Make no mistake, it’s never fun or easy to pick up the pieces, but there is hope!

• Viruses
• Outdated drivers

1. Write down an error messages-There’s a good chance that you’re seeing some error messages on the affected computer. If so, write them down exactly as they appear. Then, go to Google and enter those messages and run a search. See what comes up in the search results. You might get lucky and find a fix. You could also call tech support and ask them about the error message, but there may be charges for doing this.
2. Try to restore to a previous point-Windows has a feature that lets you try to start up your computer using Last Known Good Configuration. What this does is it goes back to a point when your computer was running properly and tries to restart it using those same settings. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s worth a shot.
3. Get a new hard drive-No luck with the first 2 steps? Your hard drive is probably trashed, and that means it’s time to get a new one. It’s always a good idea to start with a brand new, reliable hard drive so that you’re not prone to the same problem reoccurring. A new hard drive will have the latest features and technology to minimize the chances of a future crash.
4. Reload your operating system onto the new hard drive-After installing your new hard drive, you need to reload your operating system onto it. This lets you get your computer up and running again.
5. Restore your music, videos, and photos-The good news is that if you have an Apple device (iPod, iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch), you can restore all of your music, videos, and photos from your device to your computer. That’s right, you can transfer iPod to computer if you use a program like GizmoRip. This lets you restore files that weren’t purchased through iTunes, so you never lose your favorite songs, videos, or photos.
Don’t let a hard drive crash take you down. Follow these 5 tips to get back on your feet.
