The family-owned company which is based in the northern German town of Elmshorn is renowned throughout the country for its delicious rolled oats that it has been producing since 1820.

Peter Kölln created, with the “Blütenzarte Köllnflocken” (delicate, fine oat flakes) in packaging with contrasting shades of blue, one of Germany’s most well-known brand icons. Peter Kölln has been putting its trust in the latest product inspection solutions from METTLER TOLEDO for many years now to protect its brands and ensure outstanding product quality.

Kölln’s oat flakes are produced in line with the most stringent of quality standards
Even in today’s food-retail industry, the “Köllnflocken” (oat flakes) are the flagship of the company. Nevertheless, the product range has experienced significant growth over the years. In addition to oat-based cereals, Peter Kölln now manufactures oat specialities, oat-based snacks and organic produce. All products manufactured by Peter Kölln, are done so in accordance with the highest of quality standards. As such, the quality management system is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2008. This is complemented by certification in accordance with the International Food Standard (IFS) which focuses on food safety. As a result of Peter Kölln’s strict quality standards, the company has been using checkweighers from Garvens for weight checking and Safeline metal detectors for detecting foreign bodies for many years now.

The Garvens XE3 checkweigher inspects the weight of each and every box of muesli
On the muesli production line, an XE3 checkweigher from METTLER TOLEDO Garvens inspects the new, delicious muesli with flakes of white chocolate and almonds. Thanks to its weight classification in 3 weight zones and a wide range of extras and accessories, the XE3 is ideally suited to usage in food production. Thanks to its easy operation and memory space for up to 100 items, this checkweigher proves advantageous in many respects – especially for a company, such as Peter Kölln, with an extensive product range. This modern checkweigher automatically removes overweight and underweight products from the production process using a pusher. At Peter Kölln, this checkweigher inspects approximately 14 different products with weights between 325 grammes and 1 kilogramme. In doing so, a maximum of 140 packages are inspected per minute. On the muesli production line, the XE3 precisely inspects the weight of the various types of muesli down to the nearest gramme.

CW-ReAcT II enables networking between the XE3 checkweigher and an external workstation
On the muesli production line at Peter Kölln, the XE3 is controlled by CW-ReAcT II, the “Checkweigher Remote Access Tool”, and is networked with another workstation. This allows complete information on the checkweigher to be monitored and archived from one workstation. Peter Kölln’s production management therefore has central access to all printable data on the checkweigher and can even centrally maintain the product master data.

The Signature metal detection system is even able to detect the smallest of foreign bodies
The Garvens checkweigher features yet another product inspection solution from METTLER TOLEDO: the Signature metal detection system from Safeline inspects all of Kölln’s packets of muesli for metal contaminants prior to the weighing process. Metal foreign bodies may be introduced with raw materials in the production process, which would ultimately contaminate products and ruin the brand image. However, the Safeline metal detector ensures that even the finest of metal particles are detected in the produce. Even particles of nonmagnetic stainless steel and thin pieces of wire are reliably detected and the affected package is then automatically ejected from the production line. These highly-sensitive metal detectors make a significant contribution towards the quality assurance concept in place at Peter Kölln.

A comprehensive range of services rounds off METTLER TOLEDO’s product inspection portfolio
METTLER TOLEDO offers a full range of in-line control solutions, i.e. checkweighers, metal detectors and X-ray inspection technology. These high-quality product inspection solutions are accompanied by an extensive, worldwide service network. This makes METTLER TOLEDO the ideal partner for international companies with stringent quality requirements

For more information, please visit <a

Robust, real-time in situ monitoring with ReactIR allowed researchers to achieve desired results while simultaneously reducing reaction costs and enhancing safety for cleaner, greener chemistry.

Using mid-IR spectroscopy, ReactIR creates a “molecular video” of ongoing reactions via a robust probe inserted directly into the reaction vessel. The elimination of offline sampling provides more reliable data, and fewer interactions with volatile or toxic reaction components. Concentration changes of all key reactive and transient species can be monitored, allowing for easy mechanism/pathway determination and kinetic parameter definition-critical when reviewing the effectiveness of enzymes as catalysts. The paper’s authors highlight each context in which ReactIR helped answer these and other key reaction questions safely.

In the first example, “Application of Chemoselective Pancreatin Powder-Catalyzed Deacetylation Reaction,” Lek Pharmaceutical researchers used ReactIR to study and optimize reaction conditions/catalyst load. Their experimentation proved that an enzymatic catalysis employed under mild conditions could be high-yielding and economically favorable.

Example two, “Monitoring of Bayer-Villiger Biotransformations of Ketones to Lactones,” used ReactIR to monitor reaction progress and kinetics in proof-of-concept work. ReactIR proved a useful tool for the rapid quantification of sensitive enzyme-catalyzed Bayer-Villiger biotransformations using the simplest calibration mode. The complex culture medium in the whole-cell catalysis process did not interfere with results.

In the third and final review, “Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Organophosphates and Organophosphonates,” the inline approach of ReactIR allowed quantitative monitoring of reaction progress. Researchers were able to use small chemical quantities, avoid cross-contamination, and significantly reduce risk of toxic exposure-all measurable gains over other previously-tried methods such as titrimetric pH-stat.

In all examples, ReactIR proved non-invasive and non-destructive to chemical reaction components. This allowed researchers to more easily describe each biotransformation and ultimately improve yield.

For a full copy of the METTLER TOLEDO white paper, visit: <a

Developed as a result of collaboration between Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray and its customers the X3310′s state-of-the-art detector technology represents the next generation of x-ray inspection.

The X3310′s sensitive x-ray detector boosts exceptional detection of foreign bodies such as glass, metal, stone, high-density plastic and bone fragments, as well as simultaneously performing gross mass measurement for calculated portion control. The x-ray system is ideally suited to the inspection of small and medium sized packaged products and gives food and pharmaceutical manufacturers the market-leading product inspection technology needed to guarantee superior product safety. The system has a single vertical x-ray beam and is available in 300mm or 400mm detector widths to suit a wide range of applications.

The technology uses a 20 watt x-ray generator rather than the 100 watt generator used in traditional x-ray machines, lowering energy consumption and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). This also results in a reduction of x-ray emissions meaning thinner stainless steel is used for the x-ray cabinet, making the machine more environmentally friendly. Under typical operating conditions, the entire X3310 system uses 20 per cent less energy, significantly reducing manufacturing costs for food and pharmaceutical manufacturers. This overall reduced power consumption eliminates the need for a complex cooling system, allowing the X3310 to be housed in a slimline 300mm cabinet. The reduced footprint increases installation flexibility for food and pharmaceutical manufacturers with limited factory floor space.

The new technology’s reduced x-ray power output has enabled Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray to incorporate a larger window on the reject bin than traditional systems, facilitating straight-forward calibration of the rejection system and simplifying product set-up. In addition, the machine’s casing is hygienically designed for easy cleaning, with curved and sloping surfaces enabling water to run-off.

“The X3310 system is the cutting edge of product inspection”, says Daniela Verhaeg, Marketing Manager, Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray. “Our revolutionary x-ray system maximises productivity and profitability for food and pharmaceutical manufacturers, reduces energy consumption while meeting and exceeding global and retailer food safety initiatives”.

In comparison with earlier generations of x-ray inspection systems, the control system for the X3310 has been simplified to lower maintenance time and costs, without losing any functionality or performance. The system has been designed with gas-strut assisted lids and doors for ease of access to internal mechanisms. The machine’s light-emitting diode (LED) backlit touch screen display is twice the size of those used in standard x-ray detectors and is set at the global average operator height. To further facilitate access, quarter turn door locks have been added to the front of the system and an enhanced tracking system simplifies conveyor set-up.

The X3310 provides an improved user experience with new software and a fully-updated user interface. The X3310′s new Ethernet-enabled software is icon driven and features touch and scroll, enabling the operator to have full control over the system and ensuring it is easy to use with minimal training and without previous x-ray knowledge.

For more information, please visit <a

However, experiments detailed in the white paper indicate that the higher resin volumes required in spin columns are not the key to optimizing workflow.

PureSpeed’s bidirectional flow was shown to load PureSpeed’s relatively small resin bed with the most protein possible, providing superior final concentrations and purity when compared to the spin column procedure. Protein capture was shown to be more repeatable as well, even at significantly reduced elution volumes.

The improved concentrations that PureSpeed enables help provide samples robust enough for assaying or downstream processing. Generally, this saves time by eliminating the need to concentrate recovered protein in a separate step.

The paper also offers guidelines for using PureSpeed tip, body and bed sizes to gain maximum protein/antibody processing.

For more information, please visit <a

The new system will take metal detection for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries to an even higher level of sophistication providing manufacturers with real benefits to address the challenges of an increasingly demanding market.

Major sensitivity enhancements have been achieved through the development of a new optimum power drive technique combined with the use of ultra high frequency operation. These new features will set new standards of performance within the industry, particularly with respect to the detection of stainless steel contaminants and irregular shaped contaminants such as slithers of metal and broken sieve wires. Tablex-PRO is capable of detecting particles smaller than 0.2mm in diameter.

Among the features in the new software package is a dual level, electronic signature log-in system which requires operators to enter a user name and password for access. This advanced system captures and stores all access activities in the form of an electronic access log. The log can be displayed and viewed on the full color touch screen along with other important manufacturing data providing full regulatory compliance with the requirements of 21 CFR part 11.

Inspection process traceability is supported through the inclusion of important barcode and manufacturing batch code information within the data collection and storage system. This key data can be displayed on the operator interface during the manufacturing process.

Enhanced quality assurance is provided through a dedicated password protected QA system access level. Tablex-PRO systems advise when test routines need to be performed and when testing is overdue via highly visible screen messages. Built-in performance validation software provides intuitive, step-by-step guidance for quality assurance testing.

Tablex-PRO is available with the METTLER TOLEDO EQPac qualification package to ensure manufacturers are able to provide the documentary evidence that processes and procedures meet predetermined specifications of FDA, GAMP and GMP requirements.

EQPac provides users with fully documented IQ (Installation Qualification), OQ (Operational Qualification), PQ (Performance Qualification) and MQ (Maintenance Qualification) protocols, while a certified test kit enables pharmaceutical manufacturers to achieve regulatory compliance for their metal detectors.

Maximizing process efficiency and minimizing downtime are critical as manufacturers strive for operational excellence. The issue of maximizing uptime is addressed with a revolutionary Condition Monitoring feature which constantly assesses the performance and operation of key detector elements. This system gives advanced warning of changes which could potentially cause downtime if left unaddressed. Messages from the Condition Monitoring system are displayed on the high visibility touch screen user interface. The early warning of potential problems before they escalate to stop the production process enables maintenance routines to be conducted when equipment is off-line to maximize uptime and production capacity.

System faults and warning messages are also signaled via an optional high level, highly visible, tri-color status warning lamp. The lamp displays a green, amber or red status to indicate Condition Monitoring messages and give warnings of performance verification test requirements.

Critical messages from Tablex-PRO detectors can be communicated directly to key individuals within the manufacturers’ organization via a unique GSM gateway communication system. This allows the detector so send instant SMS text messages and emails to those that need to know. Typically, maintenance engineers can receive early warnings regarding potential downtime or line stoppages via the Condition Monitoring feature, while QA or Production Managers can be advised of over-due validation testing of the system which could lead to non-compliance issues if not addressed.

Tablex-PRO retains the benefits offered on existing Tablex systems of a choice of two interchangeable and failsafe reject devices suitable for all product types and applications. The side diverter system is particularly effective where inlet and outlet heights are low or restricted – the compact design minimizes overall throughput length. The lift flap diverter system has been specifically developed for manufacturers needing straight line product flow. This can help to reduce potential damage to larger, effervescent and delicate tablets. Both systems offer simple ‘no-tool’ strip-down, easy cleaning and are fully compliant with CFR parts 210 and 211.

For more information, please visit <a

They rely on METTLER TOLEDO truck scales to keep their business moving during the busy processing season.

During the peak delivery months of harvest, the Michigan Sugar factory site in Bay City, Michigan will receive and weigh over 2,000 loads per day from the farm using two sets of scales. On October 23, 2008, the company received a record of 12,053 loads in a single day at their 17 different locations. Overall in 2008, Michigan Sugar Company received 4,113,737 tons of beets and reloaded or transferred just under 2,000,000 tons across the scales once again for factory delivery. A fully loaded truck of transferred beets weighs up to 180,000 pounds. The continuous flow of these very heavy trucks is extremely demanding for their truck scales.

Michigan Sugar recently replaced some of the old truck scales at their largest facility in Bay City with METTLER TOLEDO truck scales including advanced POWERCELL MTX load cells and versatile IND310 terminals. Paul Pfenninger, VP of Agriculture at Michigan Sugar, recognizes the benefits of the solutions provided by METTLER TOLEDO. “Over time we have been converting our old lever and analog load cell based scales to METTLER TOLEDO because of the excellent durability and lower cost of ownership. These scales cost a little more up front, but in the long run, they save us money.”

Added Value
Over the years, Michigan Sugar has experienced first hand how lightning can disable their older analog truck scale systems. They have had scales shut down due to lightning strikes, costing them days of lost productivity in addition to the costs to replace the destroyed components and recertify of the scale. They find the lightning protection of POWERCELL MTX load cells to be unmatched in the industry. METTLER TOLEDO gives them the peace of mind that their systems will keep working through the worst storms.

Cech Scale, a certified METTLER TOLEDO distributor, has been providing Michigan Sugar with METTLER TOLEDO solutions and excellent service for more than 30 years. To keep the scales operating properly, Cech provides preventive maintenance and calibration services for the 35 vehicle scales across all of their locations. Michigan Sugar seeks bids for each new truck scale purchase, yet they keep coming back to METTLER TOLEDO and Cech Scale due to the superior product performance and reliability. Quality products from METTLER TOLEDO and excellent service from Cech Scale ensure that this sugar producer’s operations will continue to run “sweetly.”

For more information, please visit <a

They rely on METTLER TOLEDO to insure superior weighing accuracy in spite of the harsh environment. According to our customer, “the weighbridge is so accurate, local municipalities have asked to use it to certify their weighbridges.”

The densely populated northeastern United States provides enormous opportunities for the sale of aggregates to the commercial, industrial, construction, and restoration markets. Holliston Sand Company is the leading producer of high quality sands in New England. It has supplied golf and synthetic turf fields, filtration facilities, and others with high quality sand and natural stone products since 1970 from its Slatersville, Rhode Island, location. Holliston Sand prides itself on its commitment to providing superior quality products and services.

The company’s filtration sands are nature’s own filter media and must be carefully washed, sized, and graded to meet stringent industry specifications. These filter-media products are certified under NSF-61 by the National Sanitation Foundation and are suitable for municipal wastewater treatment, drinking water systems, pool filter systems, commercial and residential well drilling, and environmental monitoring wells.

In 2006 Holliston Sand’s weighbridge was at the end of its usable life and needed to be replaced. The first choice for a supplier was METTLER TOLEDO, which had been providing service to the company for years. According to Carmine Iacuone, the facility’s general manager, METTLER TOLEDO won the sale for the service relationship, competitive price, and software support. Holliston Sand purchased a 21-meter, steel-deck weighbridge, along with a JagXTREME terminal and an OverDrive software package for managing data from weighing transactions. Initially, the new weighbridge was set up for temporary use and then installed permanently when the foundation was ready. Sand can cause problems by collecting under a weighbridge and around its load cells. For the permanent installation, risers were used to position the weighbridge and its load cells above the ground. That provides easy access for clearing the area under the weighbridge and preventing frozen material from building up during the winter. The weighbridge is cleaned regularly and maintained properly to ensure a long life.

According to Iacuone: “We’re very pleased with the equipment. The weighbridge is so accurate, local municipalities have asked to use it to certify their weighbridges. We’ve also experienced no lightning problems.” Holliston Sand is planning to add another weighbridge in its dryer storage and dispensing area. The company’s full-service packaging center, which is equipped with blending and filling stations, uses METTLER TOLEDO scales to ensure consistency in its palletized products. Overall product quality is verified by on-site testing laboratories, which use laboratory balances from METTLER TOLEDO.

For more information log onto: <a
